Chasseurs Alpins 1-72
Bring France’s renowned mountain infantry to your collection with this detailed Chasseurs Alpins figure set. Representing troops from the Second World War, these miniatures capture the character of soldiers trained to operate in high-altitude terrain, severe weather and difficult battlefield conditions. They are ideal for adding a distinctive French formation to historical scenes and displays.
Historical Role
The Chasseurs Alpins were specialist light infantry of the French Army, organised and equipped for warfare in mountainous regions. During the Second World War, they served in the French Alps and took part in the 1940 Norwegian campaign, where French mountain troops fought around Narvik. Their training emphasised mobility, marksmanship, fieldcraft and operations across steep or snow-covered ground. In battle, they could defend mountain passes, conduct patrols and reconnaissance, and fight as adaptable infantry where conventional formations found movement difficult.
Distinctive Appearance
Chasseurs Alpins were especially recognisable by their oversized dark beret, traditionally known as the “tarte.” Combined with French military clothing, practical field equipment and the purposeful appearance of mountain-trained troops, this headgear gives the figures an unmistakable silhouette. Their distinctive profile makes them particularly effective as a focal point in French early-war scenes, Alpine defensive positions and Norwegian campaign settings.
Modelling Uses
These figures are well suited to mountain outposts, rocky passes, snowy landscapes, woodland patrols and 1940 campaign dioramas. Smaller scales work particularly well alongside model railways or in larger wargaming displays, while the larger options provide greater presence for detailed painting and character-focused scenes. The set is also an appealing choice for collectors of French forces, specialist infantry and World War II miniatures.
Fun Fact
The Chasseurs Alpins adopted their famous large beret in the late nineteenth century. Its broad shape became so closely associated with the formation that it remains one of the most instantly recognisable items of French military headgear.
