Churchill AVRE
Bring one of Britain’s most recognisable specialist armoured vehicles to your collection with this detailed Churchill AVRE model. Developed for the demanding conditions of World War II, the Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers combined the Churchill tank’s heavy protection and excellent obstacle-crossing ability with equipment intended to support combat engineers during fortified assaults.
Historical Role
The Churchill AVRE was introduced to help Royal Engineers breach defensive positions, demolish obstacles and support troops during assault operations. It played an important role during the Normandy landings and the subsequent campaign in north-west Europe, where AVRE crews tackled bunkers, roadblocks and fortified strongpoints. The vehicle could also work with specialised engineering equipment, making it a valuable component of British assault formations.
Distinctive Appearance
The AVRE retained the Churchill’s long, slab-sided hull, exposed track runs and numerous small road wheels. Its most distinctive feature was the short, thick barrel of the 290 mm Petard spigot mortar mounted in the turret. The compact turret, heavy hull armour and prominent engineering character give the vehicle a purposeful silhouette that stands apart from conventional gun tanks.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Churchill infantry tank, the AVRE replaced the standard turret-mounted gun with a Petard demolition mortar designed to project a powerful charge against fortifications at short range. Its engineering role also allowed the use of attachments and carried equipment for crossing obstacles or breaching defences. For modellers, the stubby mortar barrel is the clearest visual difference from a standard Churchill.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for Normandy beach scenes, Royal Engineers dioramas and north-west Europe displays. It is equally suitable for military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of British specialist armour. The range of scales supports everything from compact layouts to highly detailed centrepiece builds.
Fun Fact
The Petard mortar’s large demolition projectile was popularly nicknamed the “flying dustbin” because of its distinctive cylindrical shape.
