Churchill Crocodile
Bring one of Britain’s most formidable specialised assault tanks to your collection with this detailed Churchill Crocodile model. Developed during the Second World War, the Crocodile combined the Churchill’s heavy armour and cross-country capability with a powerful flame projector system.
Historical Role
The Churchill Crocodile was designed to attack fortified positions, bunkers and defended strongpoints. Entering combat in 1944, it served during the Normandy campaign and the subsequent advance through north-west Europe. Its flame weapon could compel enemy troops to abandon cover, while the turret-mounted 75 mm gun allowed it to operate as a conventional infantry tank.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle retained the Churchill Mk VII’s broad tracks, slab-sided hull and heavily armoured turret. Its defining features were the flame projector mounted in the front hull and the separate armoured fuel trailer, connected behind the tank by a specialised coupling.
Variant Differences
The Crocodile was developed from the Churchill Mk VII. The hull machine-gun position was replaced by a flame projector, while the turret’s 75 mm gun and coaxial machine gun were retained. Flame fuel and associated equipment were carried in the towed trailer, creating the variant’s unmistakable profile and providing a specialised weapon for assaulting fortified positions.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Normandy and late-war European dioramas, the Churchill Crocodile can form the centrepiece of bunker assaults, infantry-support scenes and engineering operations. Smaller scales suit model railways and compact wargaming displays, while larger versions provide greater presence for painters, military vehicle enthusiasts and collectors.
Fun Fact
Unlike many flamethrower tanks, the Crocodile preserved its main turret gun. Crews could therefore fight as a standard Churchill when the flame system was unnecessary, and the trailer could be detached if required.
