Churchill Mk I

Recreate the imposing presence of Britain’s early-war infantry tank with this detailed 3D-printed Churchill Mk I. Introduced during the Second World War, the Mk I combined heavy protection, excellent cross-country ability and an unusual dual-armament arrangement, making it a distinctive addition to any British military vehicle collection.

Historical Role

The Churchill Mk I was designed to support infantry during assaults against fortified positions and across difficult terrain. Entering service in 1941, it relied on thick armour and a long tracked chassis rather than speed. Its turret-mounted 2-pounder gun was intended primarily for engaging armoured vehicles, while the hull-mounted 3-inch howitzer provided close support against fieldworks, buildings and other obstacles.

Distinctive Appearance

The Mk I is immediately recognisable by its tall, slab-sided hull, compact turret and tracks extending around much of the hull profile. Numerous small road wheels, prominent suspension details and the low-mounted hull howitzer create a characteristic early Churchill silhouette. These features give the model considerable visual interest from every angle.

Variant Differences

The Mk I was the first production version of the Churchill infantry tank. Unlike the closely related Mk II, which replaced the hull howitzer with a machine gun, the Mk I carried both a turret-mounted 2-pounder and a 3-inch howitzer in the front hull. This arrangement was intended to combine anti-armour capability with direct infantry support, with the hull weapon providing its clearest visible identifying feature.

Modelling Uses

This model is well suited to British early-war dioramas, model railways, historically themed wargaming displays and collectors of armoured fighting vehicles. It can represent training scenes, road convoys, workshop settings or battlefield displays, and pairs naturally with British infantry, engineering units and period transport.

Fun Fact

The Churchill’s exceptionally long track runs helped it cross trenches and negotiate steep or broken ground that could stop many other tanks, a quality that remained important throughout the wider Churchill family’s service.
