Churchill Mk III
The Churchill Mk III brings one of Britain’s most recognisable Second World War infantry tanks to life as a detailed 3D-printed model. Designed to accompany infantry across difficult ground and withstand heavy defensive fire, the Churchill combined substantial armour with excellent climbing ability and a distinctive long, track-wrapped hull.
Historical Role
Entering service in 1942, the Churchill Mk III served as a heavily protected infantry support tank. Its 6-pounder gun gave it improved anti-armour capability, while its rugged suspension and low gearing helped it negotiate steep slopes, shell-damaged terrain and obstacles. Mk IIIs saw action during the Dieppe Raid and subsequently served in North Africa, Tunisia, Italy and North-West Europe.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is instantly identified by its tall, slab-sided hull, tracks running around the upper hull profile, prominent side suspension covers and multiple small road wheels. The Mk III’s angular welded turret and long 6-pounder gun provide a clear contrast with the rounded cast turrets fitted to some other Churchill marks.
Variant Differences
Developed from the earlier Churchill infantry tank, the Mk III replaced the previous 2-pounder armament with the more capable 6-pounder gun. It also introduced a larger welded turret, producing the variant’s most visible modelling difference: a sharper, more angular turret silhouette. These changes were intended to improve anti-tank performance while retaining the Churchill’s armour protection and cross-country mobility.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for Second World War dioramas, military-themed model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of British armour. Its unmistakable proportions make it equally suitable for a Dieppe scene, a North African formation or a European battlefield display.
Fun Fact
Six Churchill Mk III tanks formed “Kingforce” and were sent to Egypt for combat trials during the Second Battle of El Alamein in 1942, demonstrating the design under desert battlefield conditions.
