Churchill Mk IV

Recreate one of Britain’s most recognisable Second World War infantry tanks with this detailed Churchill Mk IV model. Combining a long, imposing hull with heavy armour and excellent obstacle-crossing ability, the Churchill became a dependable presence in British and Commonwealth armoured formations across several theatres of war.

Historical Role

The Churchill Mk IV was designed to support infantry during assaults, advancing over difficult ground while resisting enemy fire. Rather than relying on high speed, it used heavy armour, strong traction and a long track base to negotiate shell craters, steep slopes and broken terrain. The Mk IV served in campaigns including Tunisia, Italy and North-West Europe, where Churchills supported attacks against fortified positions and provided close fire support.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately identifiable by its tall, slab-sided hull, tracks extending around the hull sides and numerous small road wheels. Its long chassis, forward-mounted driving compartment and compact cast turret create the unmistakable Churchill profile. Track guards, prominent side air intakes and angular hull surfaces add further visual interest for painting and weathering.

Variant Differences

The Mk IV developed from earlier Churchill marks and closely followed the Mk III, but replaced the Mk III’s welded turret with a distinctive cast turret. It was commonly armed with the QF 6-pounder gun, while some vehicles were later adapted to carry 75 mm weapons. The cast turret is the principal modelling feature that distinguishes a standard Mk IV from earlier versions.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for British wartime dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Churchill Mk IV suits scenes set in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe. It can be finished as a factory-fresh vehicle or enhanced with mud, dust, stowage and campaign wear.

Fun Fact

The Churchill’s remarkable climbing ability and adaptable hull later made the wider tank family an ideal basis for specialised engineering vehicles, including bridge layers, demolition tanks and flamethrower-equipped variants.
