Churchill Mk V

Bring a distinctive British infantry tank to your collection with the Churchill Mk V from Blueprint to Print 3D. Developed for close-support duties during the Second World War, this specialised Churchill combined the family’s heavily protected, obstacle-crossing design with a 95 mm howitzer intended to support infantry against fortified positions and other battlefield targets.

Historical Role

The Churchill Mk V served as a close-support tank within British armoured units. Its 95 mm howitzer could fire high-explosive and smoke ammunition, giving troops a useful weapon for engaging strongpoints, buildings and anti-tank gun positions. Like other Churchill variants, it was designed to accompany infantry across difficult terrain, relying on strong armour and excellent climbing ability rather than high speed.

Distinctive Appearance

The model captures the Churchill’s unmistakable long, deep hull, tracks running around the upper hull profile, exposed suspension details and rectangular side escape doors. The Mk V is especially recognisable by its short, broad 95 mm howitzer barrel mounted in the compact turret, creating a visibly heavier close-support appearance than gun-armed Churchill variants.

Variant Differences

The Mk V was developed from the Churchill Mk IV and retained its general hull, running gear and cast-turret configuration. Its principal difference was the replacement of the Mk IV’s 6-pounder anti-tank gun with a 95 mm howitzer. For modellers, the shorter and thicker gun barrel is the clearest identifying feature. The variant existed to provide dedicated high-explosive and smoke support alongside standard gun tanks.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for British World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Churchill Mk V suits scenes featuring infantry support, ruined urban areas, fortified positions or difficult countryside. Multiple scales allow it to work as a compact gaming piece, railway-layout vehicle or detailed display model.

Fun Fact

The Churchill tank was named after Winston Churchill, who had supported the early development of tanks during the First World War before later becoming Britain’s wartime prime minister.
