Churchill Mk VIII

Bring a distinctive British close-support tank to your collection with the Churchill Mk VIII. Developed during the Second World War, this specialised Churchill combined the type’s imposing infantry-tank profile with a short 95 mm howitzer. This model carries the LIMITED PRODUCTION badge because the Mk VIII is less commonly represented than the standard gun-armed Churchill variants.

Historical Role

The Churchill Mk VIII was designed to support British infantry and armoured formations at close range. Its 95 mm howitzer was intended to fire high-explosive and smoke ammunition against fortified positions, anti-tank gun sites and other battlefield obstacles. Rather than replacing the standard gun tank, it complemented it by providing heavier close-support fire where conventional armour-piercing armament was less suitable.

Distinctive Appearance

The Mk VIII retained the Churchill’s unmistakable long, slab-sided hull, tracks extending around the hull sides and numerous small road wheels. Its most recognisable feature is the compact, thick-barrelled 95 mm howitzer, which gives the turret a noticeably different silhouette from the longer 75 mm gun fitted to the Churchill Mk VII.

Variant Differences

The Churchill Mk VIII was the close-support counterpart to the better-known Mk VII. It retained the Mk VII’s heavily protected hull and turret arrangement but replaced the standard 75 mm gun with a 95 mm howitzer. For modellers, the short, broad barrel is the clearest visible distinction and reflects the variant’s purpose of delivering smoke and high-explosive fire in support of advancing troops.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for World War II dioramas, wargaming displays and collectors of specialised British armour, the Mk VIII can represent infantry support, a halted armoured column or preparations for an assault on a defended position. Smaller scales are also well suited to model railways, transport scenes and military vehicle loads.

Fun Fact

Despite its higher mark number, the Mk VIII was not an entirely new Churchill design; it was the specialised close-support partner to the Mk VII gun tank.
