Comet I (A34)

Recreate one of Britain’s most capable late-war cruiser tanks with this detailed 3D-printed Comet I (A34). Combining speed, mobility and improved firepower, the Comet represented an important step between the Cromwell and Britain’s first post-war generation of main battle tanks.

Historical Role

Introduced into British Army service during the closing stages of the Second World War, the Comet was designed for fast-moving armoured operations, exploitation and engagement of enemy armour. It first saw combat in 1945 with the 11th Armoured Division during the advance into Germany. Its 77 mm High Velocity gun offered considerably greater anti-armour performance than the Cromwell’s standard 75 mm weapon while retaining the mobility expected of a cruiser tank.

Distinctive Appearance

The Comet is recognisable by its low, purposeful profile, five large road wheels on each side and compact hull proportions inherited from the Cromwell family. Its larger welded turret, prominent mantlet and long 77 mm gun barrel with muzzle brake create a particularly distinctive silhouette. Stowage bins, track guards and angular armour surfaces add further visual interest for painting and weathering.

Variant Differences

Developed from the Cromwell cruiser tank, the Comet incorporated a redesigned hull and larger turret, strengthened suspension, wider tracks and the more powerful 77 mm High Velocity gun. The larger turret and longer, muzzle-braked weapon are the clearest modelling differences. These changes were introduced to provide better firepower and battlefield capability without sacrificing the Cromwell’s valuable speed and agility.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for late-war European dioramas, British Army wargaming displays, model railways with military loads or trackside scenes, and collectors of Second World War armour. It can be displayed in factory-clean condition or finished with mud, dust, foliage and crew stowage to represent active service.

Fun Fact

Although it arrived too late to influence most of the war, the Comet remained in British service after 1945 and helped bridge the design transition from wartime cruiser tanks to the Centurion.
