Covenanter Mk I (A13 Mk III) – RARE FIND

Recreate an uncommon chapter of British armoured development with the Covenanter Mk I, officially designated Cruiser Tank Mk V and developed under the A13 Mk III specification. This detailed 3D-printed model captures the low, purposeful profile of one of Britain’s early Second World War cruiser tanks. It carries our RARE FIND badge because the Covenanter was largely retained in Britain for training and is therefore unusual in frontline diorama collections.

Historical Role

Introduced during the early years of the Second World War, the Covenanter was intended to fulfil the British cruiser-tank role: exploiting breakthroughs, moving rapidly across open ground and supporting mobile armoured formations. Cooling and reliability problems restricted its operational potential, so it became closely associated with training and home-based armoured units rather than overseas frontline service. Nevertheless, it played an important role in preparing British tank crews for later cruiser designs.

Distinctive Appearance

The Covenanter is immediately recognisable by its exceptionally low silhouette, angular hull, compact faceted turret and four large Christie-type road wheels on each side. Its turret-mounted 2-pounder gun, sharply sloped armour surfaces and unusual front-hull cooling arrangement give it a distinctive appearance that differs from more familiar British tanks such as the Crusader and Matilda.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for British training-ground scenes, home-defence settings, vehicle parks and alternative early-war displays. The smaller scales suit model railways and compact dioramas, while larger versions provide a strong centrepiece for wargaming displays and collectors. Its uncommon service history also makes it a rewarding addition to collections charting the evolution of British cruiser tanks.

Fun Fact

The Covenanter took its name from the Scottish Covenanters, a seventeenth-century religious and political movement. Despite being built for mobile warfare, the tank became far better known as a training vehicle in Britain.
