Cromwell Mk I
Capture an important early form of Britain’s Cromwell cruiser tank with this detailed 3D-printed Cromwell Mk I. Developed during the Second World War, the Mk I combined the Cromwell’s compact, purposeful profile with its original 6-pounder armament, making it a distinctive choice for British armour collections and historically themed scenes.
Historical Role
The Cromwell was designed as a fast cruiser tank capable of exploiting breakthroughs, supporting mobile operations and conducting armoured reconnaissance. Its powerful engine and Christie-type suspension gave the design excellent speed and mobility. The Mk I represented an early production configuration, appearing before later 75 mm-armed Cromwells became strongly associated with British operations in North-West Europe.
Distinctive Appearance
The Cromwell Mk I is recognisable by its low, angular hull, slab-sided turret and five large road wheels on each side. Its relatively long and slender 6-pounder gun contrasts with the broader 75 mm weapons fitted to many later marks. A hull-mounted Besa machine gun, prominent driver’s position, squared armour plates and practical external stowage complete its unmistakably British wartime appearance.
Variant Differences
The Mk I was the initial production form of the A27M Cromwell, developed through Britain’s A27 cruiser tank programme and closely related to the Liberty-engined Centaur. Its key mechanical feature was the more powerful Rolls-Royce Meteor engine, while its turret retained the 6-pounder gun rather than the 75 mm armament seen on later Cromwell variants. The slim gun barrel and early turret configuration are its clearest modelling distinctions.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to World War II dioramas, British Army vehicle collections, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors seeking an early Cromwell configuration. It can be displayed in a training area, workshop setting, armoured column or comparative lineup showing the development of British cruiser tanks.
Fun Fact
The Cromwell’s Meteor engine was derived from the Rolls-Royce Merlin aircraft engine family, giving the tank unusually lively performance for a wartime armoured vehicle.
