Cromwell Mk IV
Bring a key British cruiser tank of the Second World War to your collection with this detailed Cromwell Mk IV model. Combining speed, mobility and useful firepower, the Cromwell became one of the most recognisable British armoured vehicles of the later war years.
Historical Role
The Cromwell Mk IV served primarily as a fast cruiser tank, exploiting breakthroughs, conducting reconnaissance in force and supporting mobile armoured operations. Entering combat in 1944, it was used extensively by British armoured formations during the campaign in North-West Europe. Its powerful Rolls-Royce Meteor engine gave it excellent mobility, while the 75 mm gun could engage enemy armour, field positions and infantry with a practical range of ammunition.
Distinctive Appearance
The Cromwell is distinguished by its low, angular turret, box-like hull and five large road wheels on each side, reflecting its Christie suspension. A long rear engine deck, broad track guards and the Mk IV’s 75 mm gun create a purposeful silhouette. Its compact proportions make it instantly identifiable among wartime British cruiser tanks.
Variant Differences
The Mk IV belonged to the wider Cromwell family and was closely associated with Centaur III hulls completed or converted with the Meteor engine. Compared with earlier 6-pounder-armed Cromwell marks, it carried a 75 mm gun, visibly identified by its different barrel and mantlet arrangement. This change provided more effective high-explosive capability, making the tank better suited to supporting infantry and engaging battlefield positions.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Normandy and North-West Europe dioramas, British Army wargaming displays, military-themed model railways and collectors of Second World War armour. It can be displayed in reconnaissance formations, advancing armoured columns, roadside scenes or workshop settings alongside suitable British vehicles and figures.
Fun Fact
The Cromwell was named after Oliver Cromwell and was among the fastest British tanks fielded during the Second World War, although crews often operated it below its maximum speed to reduce mechanical strain.
