Cromwell Mk VI

The Cromwell Mk VI was a British close-support cruiser tank of the Second World War, combining the Cromwell’s fast, low-profile chassis with a 95 mm howitzer. Designed to accompany gun tanks and provide immediate fire support, it makes a distinctive addition to British armoured formations, Normandy dioramas and historically themed collections.

Historical Role

Entering service during the later years of the war, the Cromwell Mk VI supported British armoured units with high-explosive and smoke ammunition. Its howitzer was intended to engage infantry positions, anti-tank gun emplacements, buildings and other obstacles that were less suitable targets for standard tank guns. It served alongside conventional Cromwells, helping cruiser tank formations maintain momentum during fast-moving operations in north-west Europe.

Distinctive Appearance

The Mk VI retained the Cromwell’s compact, angular hull, box-like turret and five large Christie-suspension road wheels on each side. Its most recognisable feature is the short, broad 95 mm howitzer barrel, which gives the turret a noticeably different silhouette from the longer-armed 75 mm Cromwell. The low hull, broad tracks, prominent turret and restrained British wartime styling create a purposeful appearance.

Variant Differences

The Cromwell Mk VI developed from the standard Cromwell cruiser tank and was the close-support counterpart to the 75 mm-armed Cromwell Mk IV. Its principal change was the replacement of the standard gun with a 95 mm howitzer. For modellers, the shorter and thicker barrel is the clearest visible difference. The variant existed to deliver smoke and high-explosive fire while operating with regular tank troops.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Second World War dioramas, British armoured columns, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. Smaller scales suit railway scenes and larger formations, while larger scales provide greater presence for painting, weathering and detailed display work.

Fun Fact

The Cromwell was named after Oliver Cromwell, continuing the British practice of giving cruiser tanks historically inspired names beginning with the letter “C.”
