Cruiser Mk I (A9)
Recreate an important early British cruiser tank with this detailed Blueprint to Print 3D model. Developed during the interwar period and deployed in the opening years of World War II, the Cruiser Mk I (A9) combines an unmistakable multi-turret layout with the angular engineering of Britain’s first generation of cruiser tanks.
Historical Role
The A9 was designed to fulfil the British cruiser doctrine: a relatively mobile tank intended to exploit breakthroughs, operate beyond slower infantry tanks and engage enemy armour when required. Armed principally with a 2-pounder gun, it served with British forces during the campaign in France and later fought in North Africa and Greece. Its thin armour reflected the period’s emphasis on mobility, but left it vulnerable to anti-tank weapons and battlefield artillery.
Distinctive Appearance
The Cruiser Mk I is instantly recognisable by its three-turret arrangement. A large central turret carried the main gun, while two smaller machine-gun turrets occupied the front of the hull on either side of the driver’s position. Its tall, riveted hull, exposed running gear, compact turret forms and numerous vision ports give the vehicle a complex silhouette that stands apart from later British cruiser tanks.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to early-war British Army dioramas, Western Desert scenes and displays depicting the development of armoured warfare. Smaller scales work effectively alongside model railways and compact wargaming displays, while larger versions provide additional presence for painting projects, historical showcases and collectors of unusual British fighting vehicles.
Fun Fact
The A9 was the first tank officially classified by the British Army as a “cruiser tank,” helping establish a vehicle category that influenced British armoured design throughout much of World War II. It also incorporated powered turret traverse, an advanced feature for a British tank of its generation.
