Cruiser Mk III (A13) – RARE FIND
Recreate an important early British cruiser tank with this detailed 3D-printed Cruiser Mk III (A13). Introduced shortly before the Second World War, the A13 combined speed, mobility and a purposeful early-war profile. This model carries the RARE FIND badge because only a small number of Cruiser Mk III tanks were produced before the design evolved further.
Historical Role
The Cruiser Mk III was designed for the British Army’s cruiser tank doctrine, which emphasised fast-moving armoured formations capable of exploiting breakthroughs, engaging enemy armour and operating beyond slower infantry tanks. Armed with the British 2-pounder gun, it served during the opening years of World War II, including the 1940 campaign in France. Its speed was valuable, although early-war experience also highlighted the need for improved protection and mechanical refinement.
Distinctive Appearance
The A13 is immediately recognisable by its Christie-type suspension, with four large road wheels on each side creating a clean, open running-gear profile. Its low hull, angular turret, prominent gun mounting and compact superstructure give it a leaner appearance than many contemporary British tanks. These features make the vehicle particularly distinctive in early-war armoured formations.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for British Expeditionary Force dioramas, training scenes, early-war model railways and historically themed wargaming displays. Smaller scales suit railway layouts and larger formations, while the larger options provide more presence for painting, weathering and display. It is also an appealing subject for collectors interested in less commonly represented British armour and the development of cruiser tank design.
Fun Fact
The Cruiser Mk III was the first British production tank to adopt Christie suspension, an influential high-speed system that helped shape later British cruiser tanks, including the vehicles that ultimately led to the Crusader.
