Cruiser Mk IV (A13 Mk II)

Bring an important early-war British cruiser tank to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed Cruiser Mk IV. Designed for speed and mobile operations, the A13 Mk II is an excellent choice for recreating British armoured formations from the opening years of the Second World War.

Historical Role

The Cruiser Mk IV served with British armoured units during the campaigns in France in 1940 and later in the Western Desert. Following contemporary cruiser-tank doctrine, it was intended to exploit breakthroughs, engage enemy armour and conduct fast-moving operations beyond positions breached by infantry tanks. It was armed with the British 2-pounder anti-tank gun, supported by a coaxial machine gun.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is recognisable by its low, angular hull, prominent Christie suspension and four large road wheels on each side. Its compact, faceted turret, long 2-pounder gun and added armour plates give it a purposeful early-war silhouette. The combination of broad tracks and exposed suspension elements makes it especially distinctive in side-profile displays.

Variant Differences

The Cruiser Mk IV developed from the Cruiser Mk III (A13 Mk I). It retained the same basic Christie-suspension layout and 2-pounder main armament, but incorporated increased armour protection, including additional plating around key areas of the hull and turret. These visible armour additions distinguish it from the earlier Mk III and were introduced to improve protection while preserving the speed expected of a cruiser tank.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Battle of France scenes, Western Desert dioramas, model railways with wartime military traffic, tabletop wargaming displays and specialist collectors of British armour. Multiple scales allow it to serve as a gaming piece, scenic vehicle or detailed display model.

Fun Fact

The A13 family helped establish Christie suspension as a defining feature of several early British cruiser tanks, giving them the large road wheels and fast-looking profile familiar to armour enthusiasts.
