Crusader AA Mk I – RARE FIND
Bring a specialised British armoured vehicle to your collection with the Crusader AA Mk I. Developed during the Second World War, this anti-aircraft conversion adapted the familiar Crusader cruiser tank chassis to provide mobile protection against low-flying aircraft. It receives our RARE FIND badge because it represents a specialised variant of the much better-known Crusader tank family.
Historical Role
The Crusader AA Mk I was designed to accompany British armoured formations and provide anti-aircraft defence while retaining the mobility needed to move with tanks and other fast vehicles. Its 40 mm Bofors gun could engage hostile aircraft and offered greater reach and hitting power than lighter anti-aircraft weapons. The vehicle reflected the wartime need for self-propelled air defence capable of operating close to advancing formations.
Distinctive Appearance
The model combines the recognisable low Crusader hull, sloped armour and Christie-type running gear with a prominent open-topped anti-aircraft mounting. The elevated 40 mm gun, protective shield and exposed fighting position create a striking silhouette that is immediately different from the standard gun-tank configuration.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Crusader cruiser tank, the AA Mk I retained the established chassis and running gear but replaced the conventional enclosed tank turret and main gun with a powered anti-aircraft mounting for a single 40 mm Bofors gun. Its open upper structure, tall gun shield and long elevated barrel are the clearest modelling differences. This conversion allowed a proven mobile chassis to serve as a dedicated air-defence vehicle.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for British World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Crusader AA Mk I adds an unusual support vehicle to armoured columns, maintenance scenes, defensive positions or advancing formations.
Fun Fact
The Mk I is readily distinguished from later Crusader anti-aircraft marks: it carried a single 40 mm Bofors gun, whereas subsequent versions used twin 20 mm Oerlikon cannon.
