Crusader AA Mk II

The Crusader AA Mk II brings a specialised British World War II anti-aircraft vehicle to your collection. Based on the familiar Crusader cruiser tank chassis, this conversion replaced the original gun turret with a purpose-built anti-aircraft mounting. Its unusual role and distinctive silhouette make it an excellent choice for British armoured formations, historical scenes and vehicle collections. This model carries the RARE FIND badge because Crusader AA conversions were produced in much smaller numbers than standard gun tanks.

Historical Role

Developed to provide mobile air defence for British armoured units, the Crusader AA Mk II was intended to accompany fast-moving formations and protect them from low-flying aircraft. Its twin 20 mm Oerlikon cannon armament offered a rapid response to aerial threats while the tracked Crusader chassis allowed it to travel with tanks and other mechanised vehicles.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle retained the Crusader’s low hull, five large road wheels on each side and characteristic cruiser-tank profile. Above the hull sat a compact, angular anti-aircraft turret carrying paired cannon barrels, creating a noticeably different silhouette from the long-barrelled gun tanks on which it was based.

Variant Differences

The Crusader AA Mk II was developed from the Crusader cruiser tank after that design became less suitable for front-line gun-tank service. The original tank turret and main gun were replaced by a specialised turret with twin 20 mm Oerlikon cannon. The paired barrels and compact polygonal turret are the clearest modelling differences, reflecting its new purpose as a mobile anti-aircraft vehicle.

Modelling Uses

This model suits late-war British dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors seeking less common armoured variants. It can be displayed beside tanks, transport vehicles or supply columns to represent the air-defence element of a mobile formation.

Fun Fact

The Crusader chassis continued to serve in specialised roles even after the original cruiser tank had been overtaken by newer designs, demonstrating the value of converting an available platform for anti-aircraft duties.
