Crusader Mk III
Recreate one of Britain’s most recognisable World War II cruiser tanks with this detailed Crusader Mk III model. Combining a low profile, high-speed Christie suspension and improved firepower, the Mk III captures the distinctive character of the armoured formations that fought across the Western Desert.
Historical Role
The Crusader was designed as a cruiser tank, intended to use speed and manoeuvrability for reconnaissance, exploitation and attacks beyond an enemy’s defensive line. Introduced during 1942, the Crusader Mk III carried the more effective Ordnance QF 6-pounder gun and served with British armoured units in North Africa, including during the Second Battle of El Alamein. Although increasingly overtaken by newer tanks, it represented an important improvement in British anti-armour capability.
Distinctive Appearance
The Crusader Mk III is instantly identifiable by its long, low hull, five large road wheels on each side and sharply angled armour plates. Its compact, faceted turret and prominent 6-pounder barrel give it a more purposeful appearance than earlier Crusader marks. Track guards, a sloping glacis and the characteristic rear engine deck complete its unmistakable desert-war silhouette.
Variant Differences
Developed from the earlier Crusader cruiser tanks, the Mk III replaced the 2-pounder with the larger 6-pounder anti-tank gun. Accommodating this weapon required a revised turret arrangement and reduced the turret crew from three men to two. For modellers, the longer gun barrel and altered mantlet are the clearest visual differences. The variant was created to provide British armoured units with greater striking power against increasingly well-protected Axis vehicles.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for North African campaign dioramas, historical model railways, tabletop wargaming displays and specialist collectors. It can be posed with British infantry, desert transport, artillery or workshop vehicles to create a convincing wartime scene.
Fun Fact
The Crusader chassis proved adaptable even after the gun-tank version became obsolete, forming the basis for anti-aircraft vehicles, artillery tractors and other specialised wartime conversions.
