D-30 122mm Howitzer

Recreate one of the most recognisable Soviet artillery pieces with this detailed D-30 122mm towed howitzer model. Although developed after the Second World War, the D-30 drew upon extensive Red Army artillery experience and succeeded the wartime M-30 in Soviet divisional service. Its unusual carriage, compact silhouette and prominent muzzle brake make it an unmistakable addition to military collections and period displays.

Historical Role

Introduced into Soviet service during the early 1960s, the D-30 provided mobile 122mm fire support for divisional formations. It was primarily employed as an indirect-fire howitzer against field positions, troop concentrations and other battlefield targets, while its wide traverse also allowed considerable flexibility when changing direction. The weapon could additionally be used in a direct-fire role when circumstances required. Widely exported and produced under licence, the D-30 became a familiar artillery system across many Cold War and later conflicts.

Distinctive Appearance

The D-30 is defined by its distinctive three-leg carriage, which spreads into a stable firing platform and permits all-round traverse. Other characteristic details include the low angular shield, long barrel, conspicuous multi-baffle muzzle brake and compact wheels. In the travelling configuration, the legs fold together for towing, creating a markedly different profile from the circular firing position.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Soviet artillery batteries, gun-line scenes, towing convoys, training grounds and fortified positions. It can be incorporated into historically appropriate post-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors’ showcases. The range of scales supports everything from compact railway layouts and tabletop forces to larger, highly detailed centrepiece models.

Fun Fact

Unlike conventional two-trail field guns, the D-30’s three-legged carriage could be raised onto a central firing jack and deployed for 360-degree traverse, allowing the crew to engage targets in any direction without repositioning the entire weapon.
