D-30 Soviet 122-mm Howitzer
Bring a distinctive piece of Soviet artillery history to your collection with this detailed model of the 122-mm D-30 howitzer. Designed in the Soviet Union after the Second World War, the D-30 became one of the most recognisable and widely used field artillery pieces of the Cold War era. Its compact profile and unusual three-leg carriage make it an instantly identifiable subject for military modellers.
Historical Role
Although sometimes associated with the development of Soviet artillery following the Eastern Front campaigns, the D-30 was not a World War II weapon. It entered Soviet service in the early 1960s as a replacement for older systems, including the wartime 122-mm M-30 howitzer. The D-30 provided Soviet artillery units with a versatile weapon for indirect fire support and, when required, direct fire against visible battlefield targets. Its robust design was subsequently adopted by numerous armed forces around the world.
Distinctive Appearance
The D-30 is distinguished by its long barrel, prominent muzzle brake, low shield and characteristic three-trail carriage. When deployed, the trails spread evenly around the weapon to form a stable firing platform. The wheels are raised clear of the ground, giving the howitzer its unmistakable operational stance and allowing the barrel to be traversed through a full circle.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Cold War or later Soviet artillery positions, towed-gun scenes, training grounds and military convoys. It can form a compelling centrepiece in dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors’ showcases. Smaller scales suit larger battlefield settings, while the larger versions provide greater visibility for painting, weathering and scenic detailing.
Fun Fact
The D-30’s three-leg mounting allowed a 360-degree field of fire once deployed—an unusual capability for a conventional towed howitzer and one of the design’s most memorable features.
