Soviet D-74 122mm Field Gun
Recreate a formidable piece of Soviet artillery with this detailed 3D-printed model of the D-74 122mm field gun. Although its design reflected Red Army experience gained during the Second World War, the D-74 was developed after the conflict and belongs primarily to the early Cold War period rather than wartime service.
Historical Role
The D-74 was designed as a long-range corps-level field gun capable of engaging troop concentrations, artillery positions, defensive works and other important targets. Its range and relatively flat trajectory also made it suitable for counter-battery fire. Developed within the Soviet post-war artillery programme, it continued the emphasis on powerful, mobile towed guns established on the Eastern Front.
Distinctive Appearance
The D-74 is distinguished by its exceptionally long 122mm barrel, prominent multi-baffle muzzle brake and broad protective gun shield. A split-trail carriage provided stability when deployed, while two large road wheels allowed the weapon to be towed between firing positions. The low carriage, angular shield and lengthy barrel create a purposeful silhouette that stands out in an artillery battery or towing scene.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Soviet artillery emplacements, post-war military dioramas and historically inspired Eastern European scenes. Smaller scales work well beside model railways or in larger wargaming displays, while the larger versions offer greater presence for painting, weathering and close-up presentation. It is also an excellent subject for collectors of Soviet artillery and unusual Cold War equipment.
Fun Fact
The D-74 was developed as part of an artillery “duplex” alongside the 152mm D-20 gun-howitzer. The two weapons shared elements of their carriage design, allowing Soviet engineers to field different artillery calibres using related mechanical arrangements.
