D-20 152mm Soviet Gun-Howitzer

Recreate one of the Soviet Union’s most recognisable heavy artillery pieces with this detailed D-20 152mm gun-howitzer model. Combining the long-range characteristics of a field gun with the high-angle fire capability of a howitzer, the D-20 became an important component of Soviet divisional and corps-level artillery during the post-war period.

Historical Role

Designed under the direction of artillery engineer F. F. Petrov, the D-20 incorporated lessons drawn from Red Army artillery operations during the Second World War. It entered Soviet service in the 1950s, so it should not be depicted in a wartime Eastern Front setting. The weapon was intended to engage fortified positions, troop concentrations, artillery batteries and other important targets using indirect fire, while retaining a limited direct-fire capability when required.

Distinctive Appearance

The D-20 is distinguished by its long 152mm barrel, prominent multi-baffle muzzle brake and broad protective shield. Its substantial two-wheel carriage and widely spread split trails create a purposeful firing stance, while the breech, recoil assembly, handwheels and towing equipment provide plenty of mechanical detail. These features make the model instantly identifiable as a powerful Soviet gun-howitzer rather than a conventional field gun.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for post-war Soviet artillery positions, Cold War dioramas, military model railways and carefully arranged wargaming displays. It can be shown deployed with trails opened, surrounded by an ammunition crew, or positioned for towing behind a suitable artillery tractor. The range of scales also makes it an appealing display piece for artillery enthusiasts and collectors of Soviet military equipment.

Fun Fact

The D-20 shared its basic carriage with the Soviet D-74 122mm field gun, allowing two weapons with different battlefield roles to use a closely related and readily recognisable mounting.
