DUKW Amphibious Truck
Bring a celebrated piece of American World War II transport engineering to your collection with this detailed DUKW Amphibious Truck model. Commonly known as the “Duck,” this versatile six-wheeled vehicle combined the carrying ability of a military truck with the capability to travel across water and onto shore.
Historical Role
Developed for United States forces and widely used by the Allies, the DUKW transported troops, ammunition, supplies and equipment directly from ships to beaches and inland supply points. It proved especially valuable during amphibious operations where ports were unavailable, damaged or heavily contested, including campaigns in the Mediterranean, Normandy and the Pacific.
Distinctive Appearance
The DUKW is instantly recognisable by its boat-like hull, raised bow, open cargo compartment and three-axle wheel arrangement. Its high-sided body, driving position and maritime fittings create an unusual silhouette that sits between a landing craft and a conventional military lorry. These features make it an eye-catching addition to coastal and logistics scenes.
Variant Differences
The DUKW was developed using automotive components associated with the GMC CCKW family of 2½-ton trucks. Unlike the standard road-going truck, it featured a watertight hull, propeller, rudder, bilge equipment and amphibious controls. Its distinctive hull enclosed much of the conventional chassis, allowing urgently needed cargo to move from water to land without unloading at the shoreline.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Normandy beach dioramas, harbour scenes, pontoon crossings and Allied supply columns, the DUKW also suits model railways featuring military freight activity. It makes a distinctive vehicle for wargaming displays and offers collectors an important example of specialised American wartime transport.
Fun Fact
The name DUKW came from GMC’s vehicle designation system rather than the word “duck,” although its amphibious nature made the nickname especially appropriate. Crews and troops quickly adopted the memorable pronunciation.
