Flakpanzer I

Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s earliest self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicles with this detailed Flakpanzer I model. Combining the compact Panzer I chassis with a mobile 2 cm anti-aircraft gun, this unusual early-war conversion adds a distinctive vehicle to German World War II collections. The model carries the LIMITED PRODUCTION badge because the original conversion was constructed in very small numbers.

Historical Role

The Flakpanzer I was developed to provide German motorised formations with mobile protection against low-flying aircraft. Its tracked chassis allowed the anti-aircraft gun to accompany columns and armoured units where towed weapons could be slower to deploy. The open fighting position gave the crew the visibility and freedom of movement needed to traverse and elevate the gun, although it offered limited protection.

Distinctive Appearance

Its silhouette differs dramatically from the turreted Panzer I. The prominent 2 cm Flak 38, angular gun shield and open platform dominate the vehicle, while the small tracked chassis remains immediately recognisable. Fold-down platform panels created additional working space for the gun crew and give the model its characteristic top-heavy, improvised appearance.

Variant Differences

Developed from the Panzer I chassis, the Flakpanzer I retained the base vehicle’s compact running gear but dispensed with its enclosed machine-gun turret. The upper fighting area was altered to carry a pedestal-mounted 2 cm Flak 38 and its crew. This transformation is most visible in the open gun platform, shield and folding side panels, all introduced to create a mobile anti-aircraft weapon.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for early-war vehicle columns, air-defence positions and maintenance scenes, the Flakpanzer I suits dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. Its unusual outline also makes it an engaging centrepiece beside more familiar German armoured vehicles.

Fun Fact

The vehicle is commonly known as the Flakpanzer I, but its form clearly reveals its origins: a light tank chassis repurposed to carry a rapid-firing anti-aircraft gun.
