Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind
Bring a distinctive late-war German anti-aircraft vehicle to your collection with this detailed Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind model. Built on the proven Panzer IV chassis, the Wirbelwind combined battlefield mobility with concentrated short-range anti-aircraft firepower. Its unusual turret and quadruple gun mounting make it an instantly recognisable addition to any World War II display.
Historical Role
The Wirbelwind was developed to provide Wehrmacht armoured formations with mobile protection against low-flying aircraft. Its four 2 cm Flak guns could deliver a rapid volume of fire while keeping pace with Panzer units and other mechanised forces. The vehicle could also engage lightly protected ground targets when required.
Distinctive Appearance
The defining feature is its angular, open-topped rotating turret, which housed a 2 cm Flakvierling 38 quadruple anti-aircraft mounting. The tall turret sides, exposed upper fighting compartment and clustered gun barrels create a dramatic silhouette. These features also explain its SPECIAL WEAPONS badge, highlighting the specialised anti-aircraft armament fitted to a Panzer IV-based vehicle.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Panzer IV, the Wirbelwind retained the base vehicle’s tracked chassis and automotive layout but replaced the standard enclosed tank turret and main gun with an open-topped armoured turret carrying four 2 cm Flak guns. The altered turret, prominent barrel cluster and anti-aircraft fighting compartment are the principal modelling differences. This conversion existed to give German armoured units a mobile air-defence platform.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for late-war dioramas, airfield-defence scenes, armoured columns and workshop settings, the Wirbelwind also suits model railways featuring military transport or loading areas. It makes a striking centrepiece for wargaming displays and offers collectors an unusual counterpart to conventional Panzer IV tanks and other German Flak vehicles.
Fun Fact
The name “Wirbelwind” translates as “whirlwind,” an apt reference to the concentrated fire produced by its four-gun anti-aircraft mounting.
