Flammpanzer II “Flamingo”
Bring an unmistakable German specialist vehicle to your collection with this detailed Flammpanzer II “Flamingo” model. Developed during the early years of the Second World War, this compact flame tank combined the Panzer II chassis with close-range incendiary armament. Its unusual configuration and clearly defined battlefield purpose make it a striking choice for armoured vehicle enthusiasts.
Historical Role
The Flammpanzer II was intended to support Wehrmacht assaults against fortified positions, field defences and infantry strongpoints. Rather than engaging enemy armour as a conventional Panzer, it was designed to approach defended areas and employ flame projectors at close range. A machine gun provided additional protection and allowed the crew to engage infantry when the flame equipment was unsuitable.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its twin flame projectors, positioned in small mountings at the front corners of the hull. These give the Flammpanzer II a broad, unconventional silhouette, complemented by its compact machine-gun turret and Panzer II running gear. The twin-projector arrangement is the reason this model carries the SPECIAL WEAPONS badge.
Variant Differences
The Flamingo was developed from the Panzer II Ausf. D and E chassis rather than serving as a completely separate vehicle design. Its conventional tank armament was replaced by two hull-mounted flame projectors, while a smaller turret carried a machine gun. For modellers, the front-corner projector mountings, altered superstructure and compact turret are the most visible differences. These changes created a specialised assault vehicle for attacking defended positions.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for early-war dioramas, armoured columns, engineering or assault scenes, model railways, wargaming displays and specialist vehicle collections. Larger scales offer greater scope for painting, weathering and groundwork, while the smaller options suit railway layouts and compact battlefield scenes. It is particularly appealing to collectors of unusual Wehrmacht vehicles and purpose-built armoured variants.
Fun Fact
The nickname “Flamingo” reflects the vehicle’s flame-throwing role, while its two projectors could be aimed independently, giving it one of the most distinctive armament layouts found on a Panzer II-based vehicle.
