Panzer IV Ausf. F1 – German Medium Tank, 1942 Configuration
Recreate an important transitional form of Germany’s Panzerkampfwagen IV with this detailed Panzer IV Ausf. F1 model. Representing the short-gun configuration recognised in 1942, it captures the purposeful appearance of a Wehrmacht medium tank designed to support infantry and engage battlefield strongpoints during the Second World War.
Historical Role
The Panzer IV F1 served primarily as an infantry-support tank. Its short-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 gun was particularly effective when firing high-explosive ammunition against field positions, anti-tank gun crews and fortified targets. By 1942, encounters with increasingly well-armoured enemy tanks encouraged the introduction of a longer, higher-velocity weapon, making the F1 an important link between early-war support vehicles and later Panzer IV gun-tank configurations.
Distinctive Appearance
The model features the Panzer IV’s angular hull, centrally mounted turret, eight small road wheels on each side and broad tracked running gear. Its defining feature is the compact, short 7.5 cm gun projecting from the turret mantlet, giving the vehicle a noticeably different profile from the long-barrelled Panzer IV variants that followed.
Variant Differences
The Ausf. F developed from earlier Panzer IV models with improved armour protection, wider tracks and corresponding running-gear changes. The F1 retained the short KwK 37 support gun, while the closely related F2 introduced the long-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 40. The designation “F1” was used to distinguish the original short-gun vehicles after the long-gun version appeared. This configuration therefore receives the EARLY PRODUCTION badge.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for 1942 Wehrmacht dioramas, military model railways, tabletop wargaming displays and collectors of German armoured vehicles. It is well suited to road columns, maintenance scenes, infantry-support settings and early Eastern Front displays.
Fun Fact
The F1 designation was not originally required: it became useful only when the same Ausf. F family began receiving the much longer anti-tank gun.
