Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. D – Early Production
This finely detailed 3D-printed model represents the German Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. D, an early-war medium tracked vehicle used by the Wehrmacht during World War II. Designed for armour collections, historical scenes and gaming layouts, it captures the purposeful appearance of an important early member of the Panzer IV family. The EARLY PRODUCTION badge identifies this model specifically as an early-war Panzer IV D production type.
Historical Role
The Panzer IV was originally conceived as a support vehicle, working alongside lighter German tanks and engaging infantry positions, anti-tank guns and field fortifications. The Ausf. D carried the short-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 gun, which was well suited to firing high-explosive ammunition. It served during the early campaigns of World War II, before later Panzer IV versions evolved into more heavily armed and protected fighting vehicles.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. D is recognisable by its compact, angular superstructure, short 7.5 cm gun and external turret mantlet. Other characteristic features include the hull-mounted MG 34 ball mount, commander’s cupola, paired road wheels on leaf-spring suspension and four return rollers on each side. These details give the vehicle the unmistakable profile of an early-war German Panzer.
Variant Differences
Developed from the earlier Panzer IV Ausf. C, the Ausf. D retained the same general chassis and short-barrelled main armament while incorporating revised armour and production details. Its most visible identifying features include the external gun mantlet and restored hull machine-gun ball mount. These changes reflected continuing refinement of the Panzer IV design for frontline Wehrmacht service.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for early-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, this model can represent armoured columns, maintenance areas, loading scenes or battlefield positions. The range of scales supports everything from compact railway layouts to highly detailed display collections.
Fun Fact
Although initially intended as a support tank, the adaptable Panzer IV chassis became the basis of Germany’s most continuously produced tank family of the war.
