The German motorcycle and sidecar combination became one of the most recognisable sights of the Second World War. Fast, mobile and able to operate on roads that were too narrow or rough for larger vehicles, motorcycles were used for reconnaissance, dispatch riding, convoy escort, communications and light infantry support.
This model represents a classic WWII German motorcycle with sidecar team, complete with rider, sidecar crewman and mounted machine gun. The story behind the motorcycle sidecar
German forces made extensive use of motorcycles during the early and middle years of the war. Vehicles such as the BMW R75 and Zündapp KS 750 were specifically developed for military service and could be fitted with sidecars, storage boxes, spare wheels and weapons mounts.
These machines were particularly useful for reconnaissance units and rapidly moving formations. They were far quicker and cheaper than sending a truck for every small task and could carry messages, officers, observers or small patrol teams over considerable distances.
A sidecar also gave the vehicle extra carrying capacity and improved stability on rough ground.
Armed for reconnaissance
One of the most distinctive configurations paired the sidecar with a mounted MG34 or MG42 machine gun.
This gave the crew considerably more firepower than an ordinary dispatch motorcycle and allowed the vehicle to support reconnaissance patrols, defend road junctions or provide covering fire when required.
The sidecar passenger could operate the weapon while the rider concentrated on controlling the motorcycle.
This makes the model especially useful for diorama builders because it immediately tells a story — this is not simply transport, but a small mobile combat team.

Why motorcycles mattered
Motorcycles offered one major advantage: speed.
Before radios became common in every vehicle and unit, commanders still relied heavily on dispatch riders to carry written orders, maps and messages.
A motorcycle rider could move between headquarters, artillery positions, armoured units and infantry formations far faster than a soldier travelling on foot.
They were also useful for route reconnaissance, allowing troops to check roads, bridges and villages ahead of a larger column.

Fun Fact
The military versions of motorcycles such as the BMW R75 were far more sophisticated than ordinary road bikes. Some were fitted with driven sidecar wheels and locking differentials, helping them travel through mud, snow and rough terrain that would stop a normal motorcycle surprisingly quickly.
In effect, they were closer to tiny three-wheeled off-road vehicles than simple road motorcycles.
