The Panther Ausf. F represents one of the final planned developments of Germany’s famous Panther medium tank. Designed late in the Second World War, the Ausf. F was intended to combine the proven Panther chassis with a redesigned, more compact turret and improved protection.
Visually, the Panther Ausf. F stands apart from earlier Panthers thanks to its distinctive late-war turret design, giving it a sharper, more compact appearance while retaining the long-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70 gun associated with the Panther family.

The story behind the Panther Ausf. F
The Panther was developed to provide a balance between mobility, armour and firepower. By 1944 and 1945, German designers were still trying to improve the vehicle while simplifying production and increasing survivability.
The Ausf. F was intended to introduce the Schmalturm, or “narrow turret,” which was more compact and offered improved frontal protection compared with earlier Panther turrets.
Production preparations were underway by the final months of the war, but the conflict ended before the Panther Ausf. F could enter normal frontline service in meaningful numbers.
That makes the Ausf. F particularly interesting to modellers: it sits right on the boundary between a production vehicle and a late-war development project.
What makes the Ausf. F different?
The most noticeable feature is the redesigned turret.
Compared with the familiar Panther Ausf. A and Ausf. G, the Ausf. F featured a narrower frontal profile and revised armour arrangement. The turret design was intended to reduce vulnerable areas while maintaining the Panther’s powerful main armament.
The hull remained closely related to the Panther G, meaning the Ausf. F retained the Panther’s characteristic sloped glacis, wide tracks, interleaved road wheels and low-slung hull shape.

Fun Fact
The name Schmalturm literally translates to “narrow turret.” Despite the simple name, the design represented a serious attempt to improve the Panther’s protection while making the turret smaller and more efficient.
Even more interesting, some historians believe completed Schmalturm components existed before the end of the war, but the Panther Ausf. F itself never became a true operational production tank.
