GMC CCKW Truck – Bolt Action
Bring a workhorse of the United States Army’s wartime transport fleet to your collection with this detailed GMC CCKW truck model. Commonly known as the “Deuce and a Half,” the CCKW was a 2½-ton 6×6 vehicle that helped keep Allied forces supplied throughout World War II. Its practical design makes it an ideal addition to military scenes, logistics columns and historically themed displays.
Historical Role
The GMC CCKW served as a general-purpose cargo and transport truck, carrying ammunition, fuel, food, equipment and personnel wherever they were needed. Its six-wheel-drive layout enabled it to operate over rough ground and damaged roads, supporting American and Allied formations in North Africa, Italy, north-west Europe and the Pacific. CCKW chassis were also adapted for specialist duties, but the cargo truck remained one of the most recognisable versions.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is distinguished by its long bonnet, upright radiator grille, prominent front mudguards and three-axle running gear. A raised cab and large rear cargo body give the truck its characteristic high-sided silhouette, while the paired rear wheels emphasise its rugged load-carrying role. These features make the CCKW immediately recognisable in convoys and depot scenes.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to World War II dioramas depicting supply dumps, road convoys, airfields, field workshops or advancing American columns. The smaller scales complement model railways and large transport scenes, while the larger versions offer greater visual presence for wargaming displays and collectors. It can be displayed as a clean vehicle, painted for a specific campaign or weathered to represent hard service on dusty and muddy roads.
Fun Fact
GMC CCKW trucks became closely associated with the Red Ball Express, the famous Allied road transport system that delivered vast quantities of supplies to rapidly advancing forces after the Normandy campaign.
