GMC CCKW Truck with Soviet Crew
Bring vital Red Army logistics to life with this detailed GMC CCKW truck and Soviet crew set. Supplied to the Soviet Union through the Allied Lend-Lease programme, the American-built CCKW served alongside Soviet-produced vehicles on the Eastern Front. This model captures the practical character of a hard-working wartime transport vehicle, enhanced by crew figures that place it firmly in Soviet service.
Historical Role
The GMC CCKW was a 6×6 military cargo truck designed to move men, ammunition, fuel, food and other essential supplies. In Soviet service, imported Allied trucks helped sustain the enormous logistical demands of Red Army operations, particularly during the later years of World War II. Its all-wheel-drive layout made it suitable for difficult roads, muddy supply routes and the long distances encountered during Soviet advances westward.
Distinctive Appearance
The CCKW is recognisable by its long bonnet, prominent vertical radiator grille, rounded front mudguards and three-axle chassis. The elevated cargo body and paired rear wheels create the purposeful silhouette associated with Allied medium trucks. Soviet crew figures add historical context and visual interest, making the vehicle suitable for convoy, loading, roadside halt or front-line supply scenes.
Modelling Uses
This set is an excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, historical wargaming displays and military vehicle collectors. It can represent a Red Army supply column, an ammunition delivery, a troop movement or a vehicle paused behind the advancing front. The range of scales allows it to complement compact railway layouts as well as larger, highly detailed display scenes.
Fun Fact
The CCKW belonged to the class of American trucks commonly called “deuce-and-a-half” vehicles, a nickname derived from their nominal 2½-ton off-road cargo rating. Lend-Lease trucks of several types significantly improved the mobility of Soviet logistics during the war.
