Grille Ausf. H – LIMITED PRODUCTION

The Grille Ausf. H brings one of the Wehrmacht’s distinctive self-propelled infantry guns to your collection. Combining the compact Panzer 38(t) chassis with the powerful 15 cm sIG 33 heavy infantry gun, this detailed 3D-printed model captures an unusual German armoured vehicle of the Second World War. It receives the LIMITED PRODUCTION badge because it represents the specialised Panzer 38(t)-based mounting of this heavy infantry weapon.

Historical Role

Developed to give German infantry formations mobile heavy-fire support, the Grille Ausf. H carried the 15 cm sIG 33 into action without requiring a separate towing vehicle. Its primary role was to engage fortified positions, buildings, fieldworks and other strongpoints with heavy high-explosive fire. Although tracked and mobile, it was intended as an infantry-support vehicle rather than a front-line Panzer or dedicated tank destroyer.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, angular, open-topped fighting compartment and the large infantry gun projecting above the compact chassis. The exposed upper compartment, prominent gun shield, short barrel and characteristic Panzer 38(t) running gear create a top-heavy silhouette unlike a conventional turreted Panzer.

Variant Differences

The Grille Ausf. H was developed from the Panzer 38(t) Ausf. H chassis. Its turret was removed and the chassis adapted to carry a 15 cm sIG 33 within a raised, open fighting compartment while retaining the base vehicle’s rear-engine arrangement. The most visible differences are the fixed superstructure, open crew area and oversized armament, all introduced to provide mobile heavy infantry-gun support.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Grille Ausf. H suits artillery positions, urban scenes, marching columns, maintenance settings and Wehrmacht infantry-support formations.

Fun Fact

“Grille” is German for “cricket,” a surprisingly light name for a vehicle carrying the Wehrmacht’s formidable 15 cm heavy infantry gun.
