Grille Ausf. M – RARE VARIANT

The Grille Ausf. M was a German self-propelled heavy infantry gun built on a Panzer 38(t)-derived chassis during the Second World War. Combining a mobile tracked platform with the powerful 15 cm schweres Infanteriegeschütz 33, it gave Wehrmacht infantry formations heavy fire support that could keep pace with armoured and motorised units.

Historical Role

Designated 15 cm sIG 33/2 (Sf) auf Panzerkampfwagen 38(t), the Grille Ausf. M was intended to deliver high-explosive fire against fortified positions, buildings, gun emplacements and concentrations of troops. Its heavy infantry gun could be employed in direct support or from concealed positions, while its mobility reduced the burden of towing the large weapon across difficult ground.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, open-topped fighting compartment at the rear of the chassis. Angular armour plates surround the prominent 15 cm gun, while the compact running gear and four large road wheels on each side retain the characteristic Panzer 38(t) family appearance. The open superstructure and rear-mounted weapon create a purposeful, top-heavy silhouette.

Variant Differences

Developed from the Panzer 38(t) chassis, the Ausf. M replaced the original tank turret and main armament with the 15 cm sIG 33 infantry gun. Its engine was repositioned toward the centre, allowing the gun and fighting compartment to be installed at the rear. This later arrangement is the key visible difference from the earlier Grille layout and is why this model carries the RARE VARIANT badge.

Modelling Uses

An excellent subject for late-war Wehrmacht dioramas, artillery positions and resupply scenes, the Grille Ausf. M also suits model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors. Its exposed fighting compartment offers strong visual interest alongside infantry, ammunition carriers and other Panzer 38(t)-based vehicles.

Fun Fact

“Grille” is German for “cricket,” continuing the German practice of applying memorable animal names to armoured fighting vehicles.
