Harry Hopkins Mk VIII (A25) – RARE FIND
Bring an uncommon British light tank to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed Harry Hopkins Mk VIII (A25). Developed during the Second World War, its compact profile, angular armour and unusual running gear make it a distinctive choice for British vehicle displays. This model receives the RARE FIND badge because the Harry Hopkins was produced in limited numbers and saw little operational use.
Historical Role
The Harry Hopkins was intended to serve as a British light tank for reconnaissance, screening and mobile support duties. Designed as a successor to the earlier Tetrarch, it offered improved protection while retaining a light, compact layout. Development and production delays limited its wartime relevance, and changing battlefield requirements meant that few entered service and the type saw little operational use.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is recognisable by its low silhouette, tightly proportioned turret, sharply sloped front armour and four large road wheels on each side. Its closely fitted hull and turret give it a compact yet purposeful appearance, while the short 2-pounder gun provides the characteristic look of a British light tank from the period.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Light Tank Mk VII Tetrarch, the Harry Hopkins retained the earlier vehicle’s general configuration, running-gear concept and 2-pounder armament. Its principal change was a redesigned, more heavily protected hull with increased use of sloped armour, accompanied by a revised turret profile. These changes were intended to improve survivability without abandoning the mobility and compact dimensions expected of a light reconnaissance tank.
Modelling Uses
An excellent subject for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of unusual British armour. It can represent a training ground, factory scene, vehicle evaluation setting or speculative late-war deployment, and its rarity makes it especially appealing beside more familiar British tanks.
Fun Fact
The tank was named after Harry Hopkins, an influential adviser to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and an important figure in wartime Allied cooperation.
