Hawker Hurricane Mk II
Bring a celebrated British World War II fighter to your collection with this detailed Hawker Hurricane Mk II model. Developed as a more capable successor to the original Hurricane, the Mk II served the Royal Air Force in fighter, fighter-bomber, ground-attack and reconnaissance duties across several theatres of war.
Historical Role
Entering RAF service during 1940, the Hurricane Mk II combined dependable handling with improved performance and increasingly versatile armament. It flew defensive interceptions over Britain, escorted formations, attacked ground targets and supported Allied operations in North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Far East. Later sub-variants carried machine guns, cannon, bombs or rockets, allowing the Hurricane to remain useful even as newer fighters assumed front-line interception duties.
Distinctive Appearance
The Hurricane Mk II is recognised by its sturdy, purposeful profile, deep radiator bath beneath the fuselage and broad wings with inward-retracting undercarriage. Its rounded canopy, prominent propeller spinner and fabric-covered rear fuselage contrast with the metal-skinned forward section. The result is a distinctive blend of traditional construction and modern monoplane fighter design.
Variant Differences
The Mk II developed from the Hurricane Mk I and adopted the more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine with a two-stage supercharger. This required a slightly lengthened forward fuselage, providing the clearest external distinction. Its strengthened and adaptable wings also supported several armament configurations, created to improve performance and expand the aircraft’s fighter and ground-attack capabilities.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for RAF airfield dioramas, wartime model railways, historical wargaming displays and aviation collectors. It can represent a dispersed fighter station, maintenance scene, operational sortie or ground-attack unit, with the range of scales supporting both compact layouts and larger display centrepieces.
Fun Fact
Ground-attack Hurricanes fitted with bombs became popularly known as “Hurribombers,” reflecting the aircraft’s successful transition from interceptor to versatile fighter-bomber.
