Historical Field Equipment Model L – Early Putilov Field Gun

This finely detailed model represents an early Putilov field gun associated with Russian and later Soviet artillery history. Originating before the Second World War, weapons of this general type remained relevant as the Red Army expanded and modernised its artillery arm. The model carries our RARE FIND badge because an early Putilov field gun is an uncommon historical modelling subject, offering collectors an alternative to more frequently reproduced Soviet guns.

Historical Role

Field guns were intended to provide mobile artillery support for infantry formations, engaging troop concentrations, defensive positions and other battlefield targets. Early Putilov pieces belonged to an older generation of artillery inherited from Imperial Russian service. During the Soviet period, surviving guns could be retained for training, reserve or secondary duties as newer divisional artillery entered service. This makes the subject especially appropriate for scenes illustrating the transition between pre-war equipment and the Red Army of the early Eastern Front campaign.

Distinctive Appearance

The model’s characteristic silhouette is defined by its narrow gun shield, prominent barrel and recoil assembly, traditional spoked wheels and compact field carriage. Its comparatively upright, lightly built appearance contrasts with the broader split-trail carriages and heavier pneumatic wheels seen on many later Soviet artillery designs. These details give it an immediately recognisable early-artillery character.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for historical dioramas, artillery positions, depot or training scenes, model railways and wargaming displays. Larger scales provide scope for detailed painting, weathering and groundwork, while smaller versions can add unusual military interest to railway layouts or massed tabletop formations. It is also a distinctive display piece for collectors of Soviet, Russian and early twentieth-century artillery subjects.

Fun Fact

The Putilov name came from the major St Petersburg industrial works that produced artillery and other heavy equipment. After the revolution, the factory was renamed, but its engineering legacy continued into the Soviet era.
