IS-1 (1944) – Soviet Heavy Tank
Recreate an important transitional Red Army heavy tank with this detailed IS-1 model. Introduced during the later stages of World War II, the IS-1 combined improved armour protection, mobility and firepower in a more compact design than the earlier KV series. This model carries the LIMITED PRODUCTION badge because the IS-1 had a comparatively short production run before being superseded by the more heavily armed IS-2.
Historical Role
The IS-1 was designed as a Soviet breakthrough heavy tank, supporting major offensives and engaging fortified positions and enemy armour on the Eastern Front. Armed with the 85 mm D-5T gun, it offered a substantial improvement over the armament of earlier KV tanks. Its service life was brief, however, as battlefield demands encouraged the rapid introduction of the 122 mm-armed IS-2.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is recognisable by its low, sloping hull, compact rounded turret and prominent 85 mm gun barrel. Broad tracks, substantial road wheels and heavy frontal armour give the IS-1 the purposeful stance associated with late-war Soviet heavy tanks. Its silhouette bridges the visual gap between the bulky KV family and the better-known IS-2.
Modelling Uses
The IS-1 is an excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, Red Army armoured columns and late-war battlefield scenes. Smaller scales suit model railways and compact wargaming displays, while larger versions provide greater presence for detailed painting, weathering and collectors’ showcases. Its short production period also makes it an appealing subject for enthusiasts building a chronological display of Soviet heavy tank development.
Fun Fact
The tank was originally known as the IS-85, reflecting the calibre of its main gun. It later became widely identified as the IS-1 after the arrival of the IS-2, helping distinguish the two successive members of the series.
