IS-2 Late

The IS-2 Late represents the refined late-production form of the Soviet Union’s formidable World War II heavy tank. Combining substantial armour with the powerful 122 mm D-25T gun, it became an imposing feature of Red Army armoured formations during the final campaigns on the Eastern Front. This detailed 3D-printed model captures the purposeful profile of a vehicle designed to break through heavily defended positions.

Historical Role

Introduced as a breakthrough heavy tank, the IS-2 supported Soviet advances by engaging fortified positions, anti-tank guns and enemy armour. Its large-calibre gun fired an effective high-explosive shell, making it especially valuable during assaults on defended towns and cities. Late-production vehicles participated in the Red Army’s advance through Eastern Europe and in the fighting for Berlin in 1945.

Distinctive Appearance

The IS-2 Late is immediately recognisable by its long 122 mm gun with prominent double-baffle muzzle brake, compact rounded turret, broad tracks and heavily armoured stance. Its simplified, sharply sloped upper glacis gives the late hull a cleaner profile than earlier production vehicles, while the rounded cast nose, substantial gun mantlet and external fuel tanks reinforce its unmistakably Soviet appearance.

Variant Differences

This late-production version developed from the earlier IS-2 and retained the same principal armament and general mechanical layout. Its most visible change was the revised hull front, replacing the earlier stepped glacis arrangement with a simpler, more strongly sloped configuration. This refinement improved frontal protection and supported more efficient wartime production without fundamentally changing the tank’s battlefield role.

Modelling Uses

An excellent centrepiece for Eastern Front and 1945 dioramas, the IS-2 Late suits urban assault scenes, armoured columns and Red Army display groups. The smaller scales are ideal for model railways and wargaming displays, while the larger options offer greater presence for painters, military-history enthusiasts and collectors.

Fun Fact

The initials “IS” honoured Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, while the tank’s 122 mm gun was derived from a field-artillery weapon adapted for installation in an armoured turret.
