IS-2 Stalin (1944)

The IS-2 Stalin (1944) was a formidable Soviet heavy tank designed to support Red Army breakthrough operations during the final stages of the Second World War. Armed with a powerful 122 mm D-25T gun and protected by substantial armour, it combined battlefield presence with a distinctive late-war silhouette. This detailed 3D-printed model captures the imposing character of one of the Eastern Front’s most recognisable heavy tanks.

Historical Role

The IS-2 served as a breakthrough heavy tank, supporting Soviet infantry and armoured formations during assaults on fortified positions, urban strongpoints and heavily defended lines. Its large-calibre gun was highly effective against bunkers and field fortifications while also posing a serious threat to German armoured vehicles. IS-2 regiments played prominent roles in the Red Army’s westward advance through Eastern Europe and into Germany.

Distinctive Appearance

The 1944 IS-2 is identifiable by its rounded cast turret, long 122 mm gun with prominent muzzle brake, broad tracks and large road wheels. Its revised, sharply sloped upper hull front gave it a cleaner profile than earlier production vehicles. The low turret, heavy mantlet, rear-mounted engine deck and external cylindrical fuel tanks complete its unmistakably Soviet late-war appearance.

Variant Differences

The 1944 production version developed from the earlier IS-2, retaining the same principal armament and general mechanical layout while introducing a simplified, single-slope upper glacis in place of the earlier stepped front. This visible hull revision improved frontal protection and made production more efficient without changing the tank’s core breakthrough role.

Modelling Uses

An excellent centrepiece for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It suits scenes depicting late-war Soviet advances, armoured columns, urban fighting, maintenance areas or victory displays.

Fun Fact

The designation “IS” came from Iosif Stalin, while the number distinguished the design within the Soviet heavy-tank series.
