IS-2M (1944) – Soviet Heavy Tank
This detailed miniature represents the formidable Soviet IS-2 heavy tank in an IS-2M modified or modernised configuration. The model carries the RARE VARIANT badge because the IS-2M designation identifies an updated form of the better-known IS-2 rather than a completely separate tank design; the badge does not imply an unsupported claim about production numbers.
Historical Role
Introduced during the later stages of the Second World War, the IS-2 served with Red Army Guards heavy tank formations as a breakthrough vehicle. Its powerful 122 mm D-25T gun was intended to engage fortified positions, strongpoints and enemy armour, while its heavy protection supported assaults during major Eastern Front offensives. The tank’s battlefield role combined direct infantry support with the ability to confront heavily armoured opponents.
Distinctive Appearance
The IS-2 is instantly recognisable by its rounded cast turret, long 122 mm gun with prominent muzzle brake, broad tracks and compact heavy-tank proportions. The 1944-pattern hull introduced a cleaner, strongly sloped upper glacis in place of the earlier stepped frontal arrangement, giving the vehicle a more unified and imposing front profile.
Variant Differences
The IS-2M developed from the standard IS-2 through modernisation intended to extend its useful service life. It retained the established heavy-tank layout and 122 mm main armament, while mechanical, running-gear and equipment updates improved continued operation. External fittings and stowage could differ between upgraded vehicles. Because IS-2M terminology can encompass differing modification details, it is best understood as a modernised IS-2 configuration rather than one universally standardised wartime subtype.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for late-war Soviet dioramas, Eastern Front wargaming displays and military collections. Smaller scales suit model railways and large battlefield scenes, while the larger options provide greater presence for painting, weathering and collectors’ displays.
Fun Fact
The initials “IS” came from Iosif Stalin, and the IS series succeeded the KV family as the Red Army’s principal heavy-tank line.
