IS-3 Soviet Heavy Tank
Add the formidable IS-3 to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed model of one of the Soviet Union’s most distinctive heavy tanks. Developed during the closing stages of the Second World War, the IS-3 combined heavy armament with a radically shaped hull and turret that influenced post-war tank design.
Historical Role
The IS-3 was conceived as a Soviet heavy breakthrough tank, intended to engage enemy armour, fortified positions and other strongpoints. It retained the powerful 122 mm gun associated with late-war Soviet heavy tanks while introducing substantially revised armour geometry. The IS-3 appeared at the very end of the Second World War and arrived too late for confirmed combat against Germany. This timing is why the model carries the LATE WAR badge.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its sharply angled “pike nose,” formed from sloping frontal armour plates designed to improve protection. Its low, rounded turret presents a markedly different silhouette from the more upright turrets of earlier Soviet heavy tanks. Broad tracks, a compact fighting profile, prominent road wheels and the long 122 mm gun barrel give the IS-3 an imposing appearance from every angle.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to late-war or immediate post-war Soviet displays, speculative Eastern Front scenes, military collections and historical vehicle line-ups. Smaller scales are ideal for model railways and compact dioramas, while larger versions provide a striking centrepiece for wargaming displays and collectors. It can also be paired with other Red Army vehicles to illustrate the rapid development of Soviet armoured design.
Fun Fact
Although it missed the fighting in Europe, the IS-3 made a dramatic public impression when Soviet examples appeared in the Allied Victory Parade in Berlin in September 1945, where their unusual armour shapes attracted considerable attention.
