ISU-122S
Bring a formidable late-war Soviet heavy self-propelled gun to your collection with this detailed ISU-122S model. Introduced during World War II, the vehicle combined the proven IS heavy-tank chassis with a powerful 122 mm gun in a fully enclosed armoured casemate, creating an imposing machine suited to both direct-fire support and anti-armour engagements.
Historical Role
The Red Army employed the ISU-122S as a heavy self-propelled gun during the final campaigns on the Eastern Front and into Central Europe. Its principal tasks included engaging enemy armour, supporting breakthrough operations, suppressing fortified positions and providing long-range direct fire. The vehicle’s heavy gun was particularly valuable against strongly protected targets, while its robust chassis allowed it to accompany Soviet armoured formations across difficult battlefield terrain.
Distinctive Appearance
The ISU-122S is instantly recognisable by its tall, angular casemate, broad tracks and long 122 mm gun barrel. The prominent double-baffle muzzle brake is its clearest visual feature, extending well beyond the sharply sloped front armour. Large road wheels, rear-mounted engine decking and a compact roof fitted with hatches and observation equipment complete its purposeful late-war Soviet silhouette.
Variant Differences
The ISU-122S was developed from the standard ISU-122, itself built on the IS-series heavy-tank chassis. It replaced the earlier A-19S gun installation with the D-25S, which featured a semi-automatic breech and muzzle brake. This improved the practical rate of fire and required a revised gun mounting. For modellers, the muzzle brake and altered mantlet area are the most visible distinguishing features.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, late-war urban battle scenes, military-themed model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet armoured vehicles. Multiple scales make it equally suitable as a compact layout accessory, gaming piece or detailed display centrepiece.
Fun Fact
The D-25S belonged to the same 122 mm gun family used in the IS-2 heavy tank, but was adapted for installation in a self-propelled gun.
