Late-War Assault Gun with 122 mm D-25S Cannon
The ISU-122S was a powerful Soviet heavy tank destroyer developed to provide long-range firepower against enemy armour, fortified positions and strongpoints. Built on the reliable IS heavy-tank chassis, it combined thick frontal armour with the formidable 122 mm D-25S gun.
The distinctive double-baffle muzzle brake identifies the improved “S” variant. Its low, angular fighting compartment, broad tracks and long cannon create an imposing model ideally suited to late-war Eastern Front and Battle of Berlin dioramas.
The Story Behind the Vehicle
An ISU-122S advances carefully through the ruins of a shattered town while Soviet infantry searches the surrounding buildings. Its long gun points toward a suspected German defensive position hidden beyond the rubble.
Inside the armoured fighting compartment, the crew prepares another two-part 122 mm round. The commander studies the road ahead while the driver carefully steers around shell holes, collapsed walls and abandoned vehicles.
The ISU-122S was not built for speed or close-quarter manoeuvring. Its strength was delivering a devastating shot from a protected position before the enemy could respond.
Historical Background
The original ISU-122 was developed by mounting the 122 mm A-19S gun inside the fixed superstructure of the ISU-152. It provided excellent range and armour penetration but used a manually operated screw breech that limited its rate of fire.
The improved ISU-122S received the 122 mm D-25S gun, a version of the weapon used in the IS-2 heavy tank. Its semi-automatic sliding breech and improved controls allowed the crew to load and fire more quickly.
The large muzzle brake absorbed much of the gun’s recoil and became the easiest visual distinction between the ISU-122S and the earlier ISU-122.
These vehicles served during the final Soviet offensives of WWII, attacking German tanks, bunkers, buildings and fortified positions. Although officially classed as a self-propelled artillery vehicle, its powerful gun made it an extremely capable heavy tank destroyer.

Interesting Fact
The ISU-122S used a weapon closely related to the IS-2’s 122 mm gun. Placing it inside a spacious fixed superstructure gave the crew more working room than was available inside the heavy tank’s rotating turret.
Fun Fact
The ISU-122S carried enormous two-part ammunition, so its loader received a full-body workout every time the commander called for another round!

Painting and Weathering Ideas
Finish the vehicle in Soviet military green with dark steel tracks and polished wear across the raised track surfaces. Add mud around the suspension, dust across the casemate and fuel staining beneath the external tanks.
For a vehicle advancing into Germany, add brick dust, scratches and rubble along the lower hull. Bold identification stripes, tactical numbers or a hand-painted Soviet slogan will give the model additional character.
