ISU-152 SPG
Bring formidable late-war Soviet heavy firepower to your collection with this detailed ISU-152 self-propelled gun model. Introduced during the Second World War, the ISU-152 combined a heavily armoured chassis with a powerful 152 mm gun-howitzer, creating an imposing Red Army assault vehicle ideally suited to Eastern Front scenes.
Historical Role
The ISU-152 served as a heavy self-propelled artillery piece and assault gun. Its principal tasks included destroying fortified positions, supporting infantry attacks and engaging hardened battlefield targets with powerful high-explosive shells. It could also confront enemy armour when required, although its relatively slow loading and limited ammunition capacity favoured deliberate, well-supported employment. The model receives the SPECIAL WEAPONS badge because its exceptionally large 152 mm gun-howitzer provided substantial assault and heavy-fire support.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, slab-sided casemate, long gun barrel and prominent mantlet. A low, broad hull, heavy tracks and a roof crowded with hatches and fittings give the ISU-152 its characteristic purposeful silhouette. The offset gun mounting and lack of a rotating turret further distinguish it from conventional Soviet heavy tanks.
Variant Differences
The ISU-152 was developed around the chassis and mechanical layout of the Soviet IS heavy tank family. Instead of a rotating tank turret, it used a fixed armoured superstructure housing the 152 mm ML-20S gun-howitzer. This produced the model’s most visible differences: a large casemate, forward-mounted weapon and boxier upper profile. The arrangement provided a practical platform for heavy artillery support under armour.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to late-war Eastern Front dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors. It can form the centrepiece of an assault column, artillery position, urban battle scene or vehicle maintenance setting.
Fun Fact
The ISU-152 became associated with the nickname “Zveroboy,” often translated as “beast killer,” reflecting its reputation for confronting heavily armoured German vehicles as well as smashing defensive positions.
