Jagdpanzer IV L/48 Late
Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s distinctive late-war Panzerjäger with this detailed Jagdpanzer IV L/48 Late model. Combining the proven Panzer IV running gear with a low, heavily sloped fighting compartment, this vehicle offers an unmistakable profile for historically themed displays, armoured formations and World War II collections.
Historical Role
The Jagdpanzer IV was designed as a dedicated tank destroyer for German armoured and Panzerjäger units. Its fixed superstructure mounted the 7.5 cm Pak 39 L/48, a capable weapon intended to engage enemy armour from concealed or prepared positions. The low silhouette and sloping frontal armour supported defensive ambush tactics, although the absence of a rotating turret meant the entire vehicle often had to turn when tracking targets outside the gun’s limited traverse.
Distinctive Appearance
This late-production L/48 vehicle is characterised by its compact casemate, sharply angled glacis, long gun barrel and low roofline. The offset armament, driver’s position, Panzer IV-derived suspension and broad rear engine deck create a recognisable asymmetrical appearance. Its purposeful shape contrasts strongly with the taller, turreted Panzer IV.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Panzer IV chassis, the Jagdpanzer IV replaced the base tank’s rotating turret and upper hull with a fixed, sloped fighting compartment. It retained much of the established automotive layout while carrying the 7.5 cm Pak 39 L/48 in a limited-traverse mounting. The change produced a lower, better-protected frontal profile suited to the specialised tank-destroyer role.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for late-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It can represent a vehicle in a concealed firing position, a Wehrmacht column, a workshop scene or a defensive deployment on the Eastern or Western Front.
Fun Fact
The L/48 version represented the original Jagdpanzer IV armament arrangement before production emphasis shifted towards variants carrying the longer 7.5 cm L/70 gun.
