Jagdpanzer IV L/48 with Zimmerit
Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable late-war armoured fighting vehicles with this detailed Jagdpanzer IV L/48 model. Combining a low silhouette, sloped armour and a powerful 7.5 cm Pak 39 L/48 gun, this turretless Panzerjäger was designed to engage enemy armour from concealed positions. The textured Zimmerit coating adds further visual character and period authenticity.
Historical Role
Introduced during World War II, the Jagdpanzer IV served as a mobile tank destroyer within German Panzerjäger formations. Its low profile and well-sloped frontal armour made it particularly suitable for defensive ambushes, supporting counterattacks and covering likely enemy approaches. The L/48 gun provided an effective balance of anti-armour performance and mobility before the longer-armed Panzer IV/70 variants entered service.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is defined by its compact turretless casemate, sharply sloped frontal plates, long gun barrel and low roofline. Side skirts, broad tracks and the Panzer IV running gear reinforce its purposeful appearance. Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine paste creates a distinctive ridged texture across the armour surfaces, making this version especially appealing as a display or painting project.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Panzer IV chassis, the Jagdpanzer IV replaced the base tank’s rotating turret with a fixed, heavily sloped casemate mounting the 7.5 cm Pak 39 L/48. This produced a lower vehicle with a limited gun traverse but stronger frontal protection. The design existed to provide Panzerjäger units with a well-protected, purpose-built tank destroyer rather than relying solely on open-topped or improvised vehicles.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for late-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, this model suits defensive positions, woodland ambush scenes, ruined towns, workshop settings and armoured columns. The range of scales supports everything from compact railway layouts to highly detailed centrepiece builds.
Fun Fact
Zimmerit was applied to reduce the ability of magnetic anti-tank charges to adhere to armour, even though such weapons were not widely used by Germany’s opponents.
