Junkers Ju 87 Stuka

Recreate one of the most recognisable German aircraft of World War II with this detailed Junkers Ju 87 Stuka model. Designed for precision dive-bombing and tactical support, the Ju 87 became closely associated with early-war Luftwaffe operations and remains an unmistakable subject for historical aviation collections.

Historical Role

The Junkers Ju 87 was a two-seat Luftwaffe dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft. Its steep diving attack profile allowed crews to deliver bombs with considerable accuracy against battlefield positions, bridges, transport routes and other tactical targets. The Stuka played a prominent role during the early campaigns in Poland, the Low Countries and France, before continuing to serve in the Mediterranean and on the Eastern Front. Later versions increasingly undertook ground-attack and anti-armour duties as the aircraft became more vulnerable to modern fighters.

Distinctive Appearance

The Ju 87 is instantly identified by its sharply cranked inverted-gull wings, fixed landing gear with large streamlined spats, angular tail and long framed cockpit canopy. Dive brakes beneath the wings further emphasise its specialised purpose. Some early aircraft also carried wind-driven sirens on the undercarriage, contributing to the Stuka’s famous sound during diving attacks.

Modelling Uses

This model is well suited to airfield scenes, maintenance settings and operational dioramas from multiple World War II theatres. It can form a striking centrepiece for model railways, complement aircraft and vehicle collections, or add historical depth to wargaming displays. The broad selection of scales also makes it suitable for collectors ranging from compact-layout enthusiasts to large-scale painters and display modellers.

Fun Fact

“Stuka” was not the aircraft’s official model name. It was an abbreviation of the German word Sturzkampfflugzeug, meaning “dive-combat aircraft” or, more commonly, “dive bomber.”
