KhTZ-16
The KhTZ-16 brings one of the Soviet Union’s most striking wartime improvisations to your collection. Created during the desperate conditions of 1941, this armoured tractor combined an agricultural tracked chassis with locally produced armour and weapon fittings. Its practical, makeshift character makes it an unusual alternative to conventional Red Army tanks and an evocative subject for Eastern Front scenes.
Historical Role
Developed at the Kharkov Tractor Factory as German forces advanced into Soviet territory, the KhTZ-16 was intended to supplement severe shortages of purpose-built armoured fighting vehicles. It was conceived for local defence and infantry support, using an available tractor platform adapted for combat. Armament could vary according to available components, reflecting the urgent circumstances surrounding its construction rather than a fully standardised production design.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle’s agricultural origins remain clearly visible in its narrow tracked running gear, compact proportions and upright profile. Angular armour plates create a box-like fighting compartment, while the simple weapon installation and utilitarian construction give the KhTZ-16 a distinctly improvised silhouette. These features explain its FIELD MODIFICATION badge: it represents an improvised wartime armoured tractor conversion rather than a conventional factory-designed tank.
Variant Differences
The KhTZ-16 developed from a Soviet tracked agricultural tractor chassis, adapted with protective armour, a combat compartment and provision for available weapons. Compared with the unarmoured tractor, its most obvious modelling differences are the enclosed angular body, armoured front and fighting-vehicle fittings. The conversion existed to place readily available industrial machinery into a defensive battlefield role during an acute wartime emergency.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for 1941 Eastern Front dioramas, factory-defence scenes and retreat columns, the KhTZ-16 also suits model railways featuring wartime industrial traffic. It offers wargaming displays an unconventional Soviet support vehicle and gives collectors a memorable example of emergency Red Army engineering.
Fun Fact
The designation “KhTZ” comes from the Kharkov Tractor Factory, highlighting how Soviet civilian industrial capacity was redirected towards emergency military needs.
